Project Description

Jason Borkland came to Rosie’s Creative hoping to create a website that offered a public platform for his numerous dynamic personal endeavors. Engaged in a number of active pursuits as well as conservation work, his goal was to craft a personal brand that would help his conservation work and adventurous lifestyle reach a broader audience and help secure recognition and funding for worthy projects. The role of Rosie’s Creative was to create a mobile-friendly, fully expandable website that could be easily grown to include future expansions into further high adventure and conservation endeavors without sacrificing speed and information flow.

Through our initial consultation and our discovery process, Rosie’s Creative decided that a website built with WordPress would be the best way to meet Mr. Borkland’s needs. He wanted to create a modern website that focused on audience engagement, creating a smooth, distraction-free functionality that allowed the viewer to feel included in the wonder and adventure that is his signature style. Our ultimate goal was to be able to create an almost immersive feeling, to really draw viewers in to experience the world as our client sees it. It also needed to be attractive and mobile friendly, as the ideal audience is one as active as our client – and active users tend to access websites via their phones while out and engaging the world. We opted to use WordPress because of its expandability, its mobile responsive features, and its built-in SEO benefits, among other reasons. We built the new site using a fully custom theme designed to accommodate future growth without sacrificing current functionality.

Jason Borkland wanted the website to reflect the passionate engagement he feels when interacting with the wonders of the world. The key to evoking that feeling was to create a navigation menu that was clear and easy to follow, but based around key terms that reflect action and excitement – terms that get a viewer’s visualization moving. We also worked to ensure that the navigation was almost instinctive in its flow, with each aspect of Mr. Borkland’s high adventure pursuits distilled into an evocative snapshot. The overall website was built to handle the client’s ever-expanding list of certifications, interests, and conservation efforts, with room built in the back end for new sections to be added as needed. This type of forward-thinking design optimizes the parameters of current technology to keep a website looking great and performing well for years to come.

Our graphic design choices in creating the unique look of this site focused primarily on allowing the breath-taking visuals from Mr, Borkland’s adventures take the spotlight, in combination with the logo we developed with the client. Using that logo and a targeted brand design discovery process to hone that aesthetic, we dialed in the final color palette to make targeted use of high-contrast black and white, with sleek shades of grey and evocative accents in a deep ultramarine blue that draws the eye and adds depth. The goal is to provide a tasteful yet solid backdrop to the jaw-dropping video and photographic imagery that conveys depth and wonder. Typeface selections were made with a focus on readability and accessibility, using clean, modern sans serifs throughout the site.
