Beat the Heat: Marketing Tips for Summer

Tips to Tackle the Summer Slump.

The weather is heating up, the days are getting longer, and the school year is winding down – finally, summer is almost here. And while some businesses are gearing up for their peak season, many others are affected by the notorious “summer slump,” as customers’ attention is divided and they become less susceptible to many marketing efforts.

Even if summer is your peak season, you should still take into consideration the unique challenges that come with trying to reach your target audience during this time of year. There’s more to summer marketing than just scheduling promotions around big holidays. Your customers settle into different patterns of behavior in summer, and adopt different spending habits. You’ve got to be aware of these changes, and adjust your marketing tactics accordingly.

With that in mind, here are a few things you can do to maximize your marketing success this summer…

Focus on Mobile.
With your target audience more likely to be away from their desktop PC, it’s especially important to ensure that your website is as mobile-friendly as possible. Other mobile-focused marketing techniques, like email marketing or text message marketing, are also a good way to reach people.

Cut the Fat.
Your customers are outside and on the move, meaning they’ll be less likely to read through lengthy email messages or bulky web copy. Keep your marketing messages short and focused. On social media, focus more on visual content like photos, infographics, or videos, as opposed to blocks to text.

Force a Buying Decision.
A major contributing factor to the “summer slump” is the fact that with so many activities and events competing for customers’ attention, they’ll tend to postpone larger purchases. One strategy to deal with this is to use short-term “flash sales” to create a sense of urgency in the customer’s mind.

Go Outside!
Get out there and interact with people. Consider making an appearance at a local festival or event that’s a good fit for your business. Branded giveaways like frisbees or beer koozies are a great way to get your name and your logo out there.
